Nick (Nissim) Leon (29 March 1931 – 22 August 2017) immigrated from England to Australia with his wife, Annette, and their children, Myles and Cara in September 1970, settling in Canberra where Nick worked as an engineer with the Government Printing Office.
Nick became involved with amateur theatre in 1978 when we worked on the Canberra Philharmonic Society production of Fiddler on the Roof. His passion for theatre developed into obsession as he became involved with up to 100 theatre performances over the next 4 decades, working with a variety of theatre companies in Canberra and interstate. Nick’s involvement in productions was mainly in the areas of props and set design, however, he was stage manager on several productions and also directed a number of performances. Theatre became a family affair, with his wife Annette regularly working on costume design. Their son Myles also developed a passion for theatre. Acting in his first performance “Oliver” in 1980, Myles has worked in state production and direction in Canberra as well as in South Australia, where he is the committee of the Noarlunga Theatre Company.
The collection is organised chronologically by date of performance. Items include flyers, photographs and news cuttings relevant to each production. In some cases there were also letters of appreciation and certificates acknowledging Nick’s involvement in the production.
