Beginnings
The CAT Awards began in 1995 inspired by the need to recognise the contribution of amateur theatre to the cultural and social life of towns and cities in Canberra and the surrounding region. It was formed by actress/singer Kate Peters, and theatre publicist Coralie Wood.
Scope
The CAT Awards includes amateur or pro-am productions of musical theatre, spoken word (drama and comedy), ballet and dance events, and variety shows. It excludes music concerts such as classical, rock, or jazz. Productions by youth groups, secondary schools and colleges are included.
Operation of the CAT Awards
The CAT Awards is a membership based entity. Theatre companies pay an annual membership fee and guarantee to supply tickets to judges to attend performances.
The CAT judges are from Canberra. Travel and accommodation costs for judges to attend performances outside Canberra are shared by the judges themselves and the CAT Awards organisation.
The geographic spread of companies in the CAT Awards scheme has reached to the south coast as far as Bega, north to the Southern Highlands and Wollongong, west to Orange and Wellington, and south to Wagga Wagga and Albury. There is a strong representation of Canberra based companies
Several judges attend each production and rank it according to various criteria. At the end of the year (November) the scores are tallied and a list of nominations is released usually at a function held in Canberra. The CAT Awards Gala Night is held in Canberra in February of the following year. (NB until 2005 the Gala Awards Night was held at the end of the calendar year). The Gala Awards Night includes selected staged performances from some of the year’s productions.
In 2012 an additional award was introduced, the Judges’ Choice Awards for which each judge chooses their personal favourite. The results of this award were announced ahead of the Gala Awards night and listed in the Gala Awards programme.
Management
CAT Awards is governed by a Board which includes members who are not involved directly in theatre. There is a representative of the judges on the Board. As at 1/1/2013 the CEO of the CAT Awards is Coralie Wood OAM.
The CAT Awards has attracted Patrons and Sponsors who support the scheme and participate in the Gala Awards night. The single major sponsor usually has naming rights for the scheme, for example as at 1 Januuary 2013 it is the ACTEWAGL Canberra Area Theatre Awards.
Publications and records
The CAT Awards collection includes complete sets of the Nomination booklets for each year and a set of the programmes for the Gala Awards Night. Annual lists of the participating companies are published in the Gala Awards Night programmes as are lists of judges for the year and members of the CAT Awards Board.
A complete list of winners for each year is published on the CAT Awards website.
A consolidated list of winners 1995-2004 appeared in the Gala Awards Night programme for 2005
The collection of administrative records of the CAT Awards, though somewhat incomplete, reflects the core business of the organisation, ie. membership of the organisation and judging the shows with the final results culminating in the Gala Awards night.
More information on the CAT Awards is on the website www.catawards.com.au
