Bruce E Butler, a CSIRO soil scientist, and his wife, Edythe, were active in the Arts Council movement in Australia from the 1950s.
While living in Deniliquin, NSW, where Edythe was a librarian at the local public library, they were instrumental in the formation of the Arts Council Denliquin Branch in 1953. On moving to Canberra, ca 1955, they became involved in the arts and in 1962 Bruce was the first secretary of the ACT Branch of the Arts Council of Australia, a position he held until 1967 and which he later resumed.
Both Bruce and Edythe remained active in the ACT Branch all their lives, serving on boards and committees.
Edythe was the founding president of Pro Musica in Canberra and is remembered by the Edythe Butler Memorial Perpetual Trophy awarded at the National Eisteddfod.
These records were given to local historian Lyall Gillespie for safekeeping and donated by his son, Neil, to the ACT Heritage Library following Lyall's death.
Records of the Arts Council of Australia ACT Branch are also held by the National Library of Australia.
