This album was put together by William ‘Bill’ Day, of Sydney, an engineering draughtsman who worked for Thiess on NSW and ACT projects from about 1962 until his retirement in 2004/2005. Bill worked on the drawings for both Googong and Corin Dams, and took most of the photographs in the album. After his retirement, Bill gave the album to Phil Butler.
Phil worked with Thiess from 1969 until 2011, beginning as an apprentice plant operator and ending as site manager/supervisor on projects throughout Australia. In Canberra, he worked mainly on roads and subdivisions, but also on some remedial work on Lake Burley Griffin foreshores, including the south bank of Central Basin. Phil has supplied much of the technical detail for the photographs, as well as some background stories. Information supplied February 2012.
Thiess undertook most of the earthmoving infrastructure work for the National Capital Development Commission and later authorities, including Lake Burley Griffin, roads and subdivisions. These photographs form a valuable record of a major period in the development of Canberra.
