The RSL began in 1916 as the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). In 1940 the name was changed to the Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA), and in 1965 the name was simplified as the Returned Services League of Australia (RSL). While the initials RSL have been retained, the underlying organisational name has changed twice more: in 1983 to Returned Services League of Australia Limited, and in 1990 to Returned and Services League of Australia Limited.

The original branches were Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. New South Wales joined in 1917, Western Australia in 1918, and the ACT in 1927. The national body has had its headquarters in Canberra since 1963.

The objects of the RSL have not changed since its inception. The RSL ensures that there are support programs in place for the care and wellbeing of serving and ex-service members of the Defence Force and their families, and that appropriate commemoration and community awareness are maintained.

The collection consists of minutes and other administrative records of the ACT Branch and its sub-branches Imperial, North Canberra, Causeway, Kingston, Ex-Servicewomen’s, Capital Hill, Barton, including Barton-Capital and British, and British Ex-service.
