The Kaye family is integral to the early settlement of the Canberra district, and its history is recorded in a number of publications including Ann Gugler’s True Tales from Canberra's Vanished Suburbs of Westlake, Westridge and Acton(ACT Heritage Library H 994.71 TRUE).
Joseph Kaye emigrated from Yorkshire in 1832; his son William married Ellen McClafferty of Ginninderra and they had eight children, five boys and three girls. Sidney Sylvester (1904 – 1964) was the sixth child and fifth son. In 1940 Sid married Monica Edna Walker (1904 – 1976) but they had no children. Sid was a grocer in Queanbeyan, in business with his brother William.
Sid lived at 85 Campbell Street, Queanbeyan from about 1936, at first with his widowed mother and then with Monica. Sid and Monica moved to 65 McCormack Street, Curtin about December 1965. Sid particularly was a keen amateur photographer and entered photographic competitions with some success. He and Monica recorded their homes in Queanbeyan and Canberra as well as travels around the eastern states and South Australia. Many slides are annotated SK or MK, evidently denoting the photographer.
Monica Kaye left the collection of 35mm colour transparencies to her nephew Fred Naughton, who subsequently arranged for it to be deposited with the ACT Heritage Library. Of greatest interest is the photographic record of Springbank and Acton before, during and after the construction of Lake Burley Griffin. Other events and places within the ACT and Queanbeyan district, and on the NSW south coast and in the Snowy Mountains, complete the collection of 355 slides.
Note that some slides are dated after Monica's death in 1967. These were most likely her photographs, posthumously developed. "Matey" seems to have been Sid's nickname for Monica.
