Ashton’s Circus is the longest-running in Australia, having been established in Hobart in 1849 and acquired in 1850 by James Henry Ashton. It toured the Queanbeyan and Canberra district regularly from the early 1860s, but the ACT’s ban on animal acts in the early 1990s saw Ashton’s playing only in Queanbeyan from about 1994.
The collection consists of two publicity photographs, 20 x 30 cm, in colour, probably dating from the 1980s. One shows the animal tamer posed with five tigers, and the other is four showgirls in bird costumes.
