ACT Electoral Rolls 1916 - 1967

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory/Australian Capital Territory voted on several issues in the early decades of its existence such as the abolition of alcohol prohibition in the territory and military conscription for WW1. However Canberrans, were not represented in Federal House of Representatives until 1949, had no Senate representation until 1975, were not automatically allowed to vote in Commonwealth Referendums until 1977 and were not fully self-governing until 1989.

This database contains transcriptions of data in Voting Registers and Electoral Rolls of citizens of the Australian Capital Territory (originally the Federal Capital Territory) for the years 1916, 1917, 1928, 1935, 1943, 1955, 1959 and 1967. The transcriptions and database were created by local researchers Ann Gugler and Chris Newman. Previously available online at Early ACT Electoral Rolls (https://earlyactelectoralrolls.org), the database was generously donated to the ACT Heritage Library by Mr Newman.

The database contains 122,694 electoral records. While reasonable efforts were taken to ensure the accuracy of the transcriptions, there will be some errors.
