The Cook-Aranda Housing Co-operative (CAHC) is an example of a housing project where the residents were actively involved in the planning stages of the development and also granted equal voice in the management of the community. The cluster group housing layout facilitated interaction with neighbours while ensuring privacy.
The project began in 1973 with a number of sites being proposed for community housing developments.
MALA developed the first at Urambi, and CAHC the second at Wybalena Grove. There were no others.
The meeting to set up the CAHC was held on 20 August 1974, and elected an interim management committee and engaged Sydney architect Michael Dysart to prepare preliminary drawings. The first residence was occupied in February 1977, and by the end of the year Stage One was completed. Four more clusters of houses, landscaping, playgrounds and community facilities were developed over the next ten years.
This collection consists of personal gatherings of papers by several of the residents (Faye Stephens, Richard Davies, Pauline McDonough and Harold Wilkinson), and copies of relevant ACT legislation from 1975. Together, they show the development and management, and something of the lifestyle, of Wybalena Grove from 1974 to 2003.
