The Canberra Centenary Column and Time Capsule is a gift to the community of Canberra on behalf of the commercial property owners in the City, Braddon and Turner. The column was designed by Geoff Farquahar-Still, and was inspired by the unfinished Commencement Column which signified the foundation and naming of Canberra as the national capital in 1913.

The design won a competition conducted by Canberra CBD Limited, and was originally to have been located in the median at Alinga Street and Northbourne Avenue. However, that area was reserved for the future light rail city station, so the sculpture and time capsule were sited on City Hill, between the Northbourne and Ainslie Avenue axes.

The Time Capsule is secured at the base of the column. It is to be opened in 2113, although the contents were on display for a short time before the capsule was sealed on 11 March 2014. Both the ACT Heritage Library and the National Film and Sound Archive have electronic versions of some contributions and originals of the story or rationale of contributions on paper, together with the catalogue. The collection in the ACT Heritage Library will be opened in 2034.
