From 27 August 2026, Libraries ACT opening hours will change. Every branch will open an hour earlier on weekdays, at 9am.
At least one library in every region of Canberra will open full-day Saturdays.
Sunday and late-night opening will end, and Civic, Erindale and Kippax libraries will move to weekday opening.
Libraries ACT operating hours will be:
- Town Centre branches – Belconnen, Woden, Dickson, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong libraries – open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday.
- Community branches – Civic, Erindale and Kippax libraries – open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
- Neighbourhood branches – Kingston Library - open 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
These new opening hours help create a more reliable library service, with hours aligned to when most people use library services, supported by simplified rostering arrangements to strengthen service delivery and continuity, and to provide a stable foundation for future improvements.
Libraries ACT digital services and room bookings continue as usual. Popular weekday programs such as Giggle and Wiggle will continue as usual. These programs play an important role in supporting literacy, learning, community connection and inclusion across Canberra.
Saturday Giggle & Wiggle at Kippax Library will transition to Belconnen Library.
We know some members will miss Sunday visits and late-night hours.
Every region of Canberra keeps a full-day Saturday library service. The digital catalogue remains available online 24 hours a day, allowing customers to search, reserve and manage library resources whenever it is convenient. And Libraries ACT popular reserve and collection service enables customers to request items from across the network and collect them from their preferred location.
New 24/7 book lockers will be introduced at a number of locations in late 2026 providing greater convenience for customers collecting reserved items, with more locations to then follow.
Libraries ACT will continue to be responsive to community needs, including supporting libraries as heat refuges when activated by the Chief Health Officer and hosting special events and activities, such as author talks.
