Adopt a Book

Adopt a Book helps reduce waste by giving library books a second life. Instead of being recycled or discarded, books are made available to the community so they can continue to be read and enjoyed.

You can adopt one book or several, giving them a new purpose outside the library. You don’t even need to return your adopted book its yours to keep.

Where can you adopt a book?

  • Across all nine Libraries ACT branches
  • At selected Access Canberra Service Centres

Why do Libraries remove books?

Libraries regularly update their collections to make sure they remain relevant, useful, and easy to access. Books are removed from the shelves to create space for newer materials. This may be because the book are:

  • outdated
  • borrowed infrequently
  • on library shelves multiple times
  • replaced by a new edition
  • damaged or worn from regular use

Even when removed, books are still readable and certainly adoptable!
