Canberra Choral Society Ephemera

1955-2000

Item List last updated 30 November 2019

A list of performances by the Canberra Choral Society for which the ACT Heritage Library holds documentary evidence.

The Canberra Choral Society (CCS) originated as the Canberra Choral Group in 1952. The small group was made up people who wanted to sing for pleasure or improve themselves it later evolved into an auditioned symphonic choir. In the foundation years the group was conducted by Jane Malone, Ronald Penny and Peter Bailey. In 1960, the groups name was changed to The Canberra Choral Society and was officially incorporated as an association in 1962. Members consist of a range of abilities and ages.

CCS performs at least four concerts a year, including a capella and piano-accompanied concerts, through to major works of the symphonic choral repertoire using the choir’s ongoing engaged orchestra. The choir performs in venues around Canberra, including the Australian National University (ANU) Llewellyn Hall. The choir also participates in community events, such as the Anzac Day services at the Australian War Memorial.

Campbell, Peter, Canberra Choral Society: a capital choir for a capital city. Canberra PC Publishing, 2002 documents the history of CCS.

The collection is arranged chronologically from the first held document to the most recent.
