Thomas Robert Noel Lothian (1915-2004) was Director of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide 1948-1980. After his death his widow, Vivian, donated his 35mm slide collection to the Gardens. However, a number of slides were of Canberra, and with Mrs Lothian’s approval, these were subsequently donated to the ACT Heritage Library.
Mr Lothian visited Canberra several times from 1962 to 1994, for conferences of the Royal Australian Institute of Parks and Recreation and the Australian Institute of Park Administrators, among other reasons.
His visits coincided with some major developments in the central Canberra landscape: the construction of Lake Burley Griffin and Anzac Parade in the early to mid 1960s, the Carillon and the Captain Cook Memorial Jet in the 1970s, the Telecom (Telstra) Tower in the 1980s and Floriade in the 1990s. He also recorded significant new buildings such as Bruce Stadium, All Saints Church at Ainslie and the Japanese Embassy, as well as notable environmental and civic design features from pine plantations to the use of treated pine logs as barriers in car parks.
On each occasion he also photographed Canberra from the air and from the main vantage points of Mount Ainslie, Mount Pleasant, Red Hill and Black Mountain - slides 77-81 form a panorama of Canberra from Mount Ainslie in October 1970.
