Doug McIver was active in a wide range of community organisations and activities in Canberra. This collection reflects most of his major interests.
He was an Honorary Life Member, Mental Health Foundation ACT Inc, and Member of Canberra Schizophenia Fellowship Inc, SOMA Health Association of Australia Ltd and Health Care Consumers Association ACT Inc. In 2001 he was awarded a Rotary Community Service Award for 40 years in Mental and Community Health Advocacy, and was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 2004. He was active in Canberra ASH, the World Council of Churches Seventh Assembly held in Canberra in 1991, and various peace and health initiatives.
Doug was an advocate to local government for his home suburb of Curtin, and was a member of the Community Action for Acton movement that opposed the redevelopment of Acton Peninsula as the site of the National Museum of Australia. For many years he was actively involved with Canberra Stereo Public Radio and its successor ArtSound FM.
He was a player for Woden Cricket Club, an umpire, and president of the ACT Cricket Association until he resigned in protest over the Association’s acceptance of tobacco sponsorship. Although there are few records of it in this collection, he also supported Australian Football.
