Established in 1937 as the Australian Institute of Librarians, the Association assumed the title of the Library Association of Australia in 1949, and in 1989 adopted the new name of the Australian Library and Information Association in recognition of the broadening scope of the profession. State branches existed until the Association was restructured in 2001 and all branches were replaced by interest groups.
The collection consists primarily of meeting papers and correspondence, with some membership lists and photographs.
The records of the Australian Library and Information Association and its predecessor bodies in relation to its national and peak body functions are held at the National Library of Australia MS 7447 Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
