‘The Ridge’ is O’Connor Ridge, a hilly nature reserve between O’Connor and the Australian Institute of Sport in Bruce. It is also called the Bruce/O’Connor Ridge, or the Bruce and O’Connor Ridges.

Save the Ridge (STR) began in 1999 as a result of a walk through the ridge with O’Connor Park Care activists Philippa Rowland and Geoffrey Wasteneys. The Ridge had been under threat since 1989 when the National Capital Development Commission proposed that the John Dedman Parkway (later named the Gungahlin Drive Extension) be built through Bruce/O’Connor Ridge. In 1991 the Joint Federal Parliamentary Inquiry recommended that the Parkway should not go through the Ridge, and that there should be environmental protection put in place. Renewed interest occurred in 1996-1997 but plans were stalled by the ACT Greens, who had succeeded in having the matter referred to the Urban Services Committee.

Submissions were requested but the Committee’s decision was pre-empted by Gary Humphries’ announcement that he had accepted the Maunsell route across the Ridge, and further delayed due to the 1998 election. In March 1999 the ACT government announced that the road would be built but Kerrie Tucker MLA again referred the plan to the Standing Committee on Urban Services.

During this hiatus Greg Tanner and Ann McGrath, who had been on the June walk along the Ridge, independently decided to mount a grassroots campaign of opposition to the road. Ann started a petition, Greg counted users of the ridge bicycle path, and meetings began in private homes.

It was agreed that a Community Option be developed for the Ridge, but also that Gungahlin’s transport needs be reassessed and, if possible, addressed as a first step. It was also decided that a website was essential to allow public access to all the background documents and history of the campaign, and to disseminate information to supporters. The National Library of Australia selected the website for preservation in the PANDORA electronic collection, accessible at: http://www.savetheridge.org.au/default.htm.

Greg Tanner has now deposited the Save the Ridge archives with the ACT Heritage Library, together with examples of the signboards.

The collection is almost entirely electronic.  It consists of two major series

1.      annual accruals of correspondence and administrative papers 1999-2003, e.g. membership lists, submissions, articles for publication, including some subdivision into specific events or programs, e.g. Watson Woodland, and

2.      documents arranged in files by topic.

There may be some duplication of individual documents with files in series. The collection is described as received from donor.  It requires improved item analysis.
