The Mental Health Association was formed in 1986 by Dr English, whose stepdaughter was mentally ill, to support families of people with mental illness and to lobby for services. The Association changed both focus and name over the years, also establishing the Mental Health Resource Centre.

Patricia Linford’s son is schizophrenic, and she joined as a founder member. Patricia was active in the organisation for about 10 years and was Secretary for some time. She was also involved with the Canberra Schizophrenia Fellowship and the Mental Health Research Institute, and in 1996-1998 she was a volunteer educator for Mental Illness Education ACT (MIEACT). Her records of involvement include newsletters, correspondence, activism, social interaction and newscuttings.

Some files such as housing and accommodation contain papers relevant to more than one of the organisations, therefore each file has been listed with no attempt to create a subject order that is not present in the original collection. Newsletters from Canberra organisations have been removed to the ACT Heritage Library publications collection.

Canberra Schizophrenia Fellowship Inc was founded in March 1980 at a meeting in Beauchamp House, at that time occupied by ACTCOSS. It provides a forum and support network for sufferers and their relatives or friends, improves community understanding of the illness and promotes improved management of mental illness. It supported the introduction of the ACT Mental Health Ordinance and was invited to have a representative on the Mental Health Advisory Council. It incorporated in 1986.

ACT Association for Mental Health began in 1984 and is a member of the Australian National Association for Mental Health (ANAMH).
