The club was formed in 1947 as the Canberra Walking and Touring Club. To begin with, the club was small but active but between 1950 and 196os interest dwindles, possibly due to transport difficulties. The Club was not disbanded and the Canberra Alpine Club, a bushwalking and skiing club, ran bushwalking trips. On 17 February 1961, a new constitution was adopted, and the name was changed to Canberra Bushwalking Club.
This collection holds some records of the Canberra Alpine Club Bushwalking Section, 1951-1961. Early material was transferred from the National Library of Australia to the ACT Heritage Library in 2003 and augmented by recent material in 2012.
Early records of the Canberra Walking and Touring Club are in the records of the National Parks Association of the ACT, also held in the ACT Heritage Library.
