Robyn Read was educated at Monte St Angelo College, North Sydney and the University of Sydney where she graduated Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Town Planning. From 1971 to 1977 and 1987 to 1991 she was an alderman of North Sydney Council, including periods as Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor. She was an independent member for North Shore in the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1991 and Commissioner for Water Resources from 1985 to 1987.
Read has held the positions of Head of Central Policy Unit, New South Wales Department of Planning; Commissioner of Water Resources Commission, Director, New South Wales Land Co-ordination Unit; Executive Director of City Services, Canberra (1995-1997), and General Manger, Byron Shire Council.
Read is the daughter of Norman Read and Edith Gordon and the mother of three children - James Hamilton, Sophie Read-Hamilton and Cassandra Read-Hamilton.
The novel, The More Things Change, was published by Random House in 1996.
