Max Hinchliffe was a career sailor, retiring with the rank of Captain. As well as service in the Royal Australian Navy, he was a keen leisure yachtsman.

Black and white photograph of Mr Alford, Captain ?, Captain Max Hinchliffe, Richard Kingsland and John Overall with a buouy and a City of Canberra Coat of Arms. 

The plaque on the buouy reads "Starboard Band Buouy". The plaque on the City of Canberra Coat of Arms being held by Mr Alford reads 'To commemorate the loss of HMAS Canberra sunk at Battle of Savo Island, 9 August 1942, Presented by HMAS Canberra Wartime Survivors Association 1964.'
