Canberra City Soccer Club was founded in September 1976, and joined the Phillips Soccer League in its inaugural season of 1977. In that year, the Club’s home ground was Manuka Oval, but in 1978 it moved to the new National Athletics Stadium at Bruce. The club’s first coach was Johnny Warren.

The Club also ran teams in the local competition, and established a junior membership. Three of the Club’s younger players were included in the Australian team at the 1979 World Youth Championship preliminary finals in South America in 1979. Unlike other Australian soccer clubs that had either a strong ethnic backing or were notably British-Australian, Canberra City established itself as representative of the local, very mixed, community.

Between the 1980 and 1981 seasons, 14 of the 15 clubs in the Phillips National Soccer League changed their names, adopting unique titles. Canberra City became Canberra Arrows, and later the Canberra City Football Club. The Club competed in the National Soccer League from 1977 to 1986. A restructure of the national league for the 1987 season saw Canberra relegated to the NSW State League.

This collection concentrates on the years 1977-1980. It includes the early annual reports and historical information, but its main strength is an almost complete file of the Club’s newsletters to May 1982, and a collection of programs from the Phillips Soccer League matches.
