The Rotary Club of Belconnen was Chartered by Rotary International as the Rotary Club of Canberra – Belconnen on 11 February 1971 and since then has met nearly every Wednesday evening in the Belconnen area. It became an incorporated body on the 23 June 1981.
On 1 September 1974 the Trash and Treasure Market, the brainchild of Club Member Ron Morrison, was opened in the car park at the Jamison Centre and it has been held in the same general location every Sunday morning since (unless Christmas Day falls on a Sunday). Staffed on a purely volunteer basis by Rotarians, the income from this market has gone back into the local community, been used for local Canberra, national and international Rotary programs, and has assisted numerous other organisations and individuals over the years. To date, the amount raised by the Rotary Club of Belconnen is close to $5 million; its records include details of disbursements over the 40 years it has been in existence.
It is for this reason that Board of the Club believes its records should be preserved.
