The Australian Committee for the World Council of Churches was founded in 1946 as an expression of the ecumenical movement in Australia. Its aims and activities include promotion of Christian unity, evangelism and service to the community, education, missions and overseas aid, race relations, Aboriginal welfare and youth affairs. In 1960 its name was changed to Australian Council of Churches (ACC). In 1994 the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) succeeded the ACC. Records of the Acustralian Council of Chruches are held at the National Library of Australia.
The Canberra Interchurch Council was one of several autonomous state/territory based branches of the Australian Council of Churches. The state branches served their individual and congregational members in matters of State concern and action and especially to assist local inter-church co-operation.
The Canberra Interchurch Council attended some meetings of the Joint Commission on Church Development in the ACT (later the ACT Churches Council) but were not formally affiliated.
