The Canberra Archaeological Society ( CAS) was formed in 1963 by Prof. Jack Golson, Dr Helmet Wissowa and Dr Noel Barnard to promote the study of archaeology and interaction between professional archaeologists and others interested in the human past.  CAS was incorporated in 1984.

The principal objectives of the Society are to:

  • Initiate and organise archaeological research
  • To hold public meetings for the discussion of archaeological topics
  • To encourage archaeological undertakings such as fieldwork, excursions to sites of interest and the conduct of seminars and workshops designed to increase the knowledge of archaeology in the Canberra community

CAS holds monthly meetings at the Australian National University, with guest speakers talking on a range of topics from Australian prehistory to historical archaeology and classical studies.

CAS members have the opportunity to join in field work involving both site recording and excavation. No experience is necessary as training on the job is provided; enthusiasm is the only requirement and the aim is to enjoy the time in the field.

The Canberra Archaeological Society website as of 20 May 2010 is at http://www.cas.asn.au/

Along side was built a pise kitchen and another smaller room built of slab with a floor made out of stones. The latter was used as a store room. Another stone building was built in 1878 which consisted of 4 bedrooms plus a sitting room (lounge room) with a fireplace.”
