The ACT Dental Group was formed by Keith Traynor in the winter of 1953, primarily for the regulation of fees and for mutual professional accord, but also to hold social and sporting events for members.

In July 1956 the Group initiated an emergency roster to cover holidays.

In 1957 a new Division of the Australian Dental Association, to include the ACT, Queanbeyan, Yass and Cooma, was proposed; the NSW Branch counter-proposed a Southern Tablelands Division in March 1958. A constitution was drafted in November 1962.
