Libraries ACT recently welcomed Amy, a student librarian undertaking a professional placement as part of her Teacher Librarianship studies. Over 2 weeks at Tuggeranong Library, Amy worked alongside librarian Vera, gaining valuable insight into the role public libraries play in supporting learning, connection and community wellbeing.
A lifelong user of Libraries ACT and an experienced teacher, Amy said the placement gave her a new appreciation for the work that happens both up front and behind the scenes.
Working closely with Vera, Amy observed the broad and varied responsibilities of a public librarian. From helping customers access information and technology, to developing programs and building relationships with community members, Vera's work demonstrated how libraries respond to local needs and create opportunities for people to connect.
‘Working alongside Vera, I saw how a librarian can make a real difference in people’s lives. She builds relationships with customers, listens to community needs and helps create programs and services that bring people together,’ Amy shared.
During her placement, Amy saw firsthand how Tuggeranong Library serves as a welcoming community hub. Every day, people of all ages visit the library to read, learn, access services, attend programs and connect with others. From young families attending Giggle and Wiggle sessions to older Canberrans participating in Geri-Fit, the library provides opportunities for learning, wellbeing and social connection across generations.
‘I observed how the library acts as a community hub. People come for books, but they also come to learn, connect, access technology, participate in activities and spend time in a safe and welcoming space,’ Amy said.
Amy also spent time with Libraries ACT staff working across the service, learning about the collaborative effort involved in delivering library programs, maintaining collections, supporting digital access and creating engaging experiences for the Canberra community.
Reflecting on her placement, Amy said the experience reinforced the important role libraries play in community life.
‘This experience showed me that libraries are about so much more than books. I saw how library staff anticipate community needs, support lifelong learning and create opportunities for connection and belonging.’
