Libraries ACT is celebrating Children's Book Week 2026 (22 – 29 August 2026 ) with a vibrant program of stories, music, creativity and family fun inspired by this year's theme, Symphony of Stories.
Across library branches, children and families can enjoy free Story Time sessions featuring stories, songs, music, movement and interactive play. Children are encouraged to dress as their favourite book characters and join in the celebration of reading and imagination.
Stories, music and community connection
Special Symphony of Stories Story Time sessions will bring books to life through storytelling, action rhymes and musical experiences. Selected branches will feature guest musicians and community partners, creating unique opportunities for children and carers to connect through stories and music.
At Kippax Library, an intergenerational Story Time session will bring together children, carers and older community members to share stories, songs and creative experiences across generations.
These sessions support early literacy and help children develop language, communication and social skills through stories, singing and play.
Meet author and illustrator Eleri Harris
A highlight of this year's program is Create a comic with Eleri Harris, a hands-on workshop with the CBCA-shortlisted author and illustrator of A Loo of One's Own.
Designed for children aged 8–15 years, the workshop will introduce comic-making techniques, character design and visual storytelling. Participants will create their own comic strip, meet a contemporary Australian creator and gain insights into the writing and illustration process.
Celebrating a love of reading
Alongside Story Time sessions and special events, Libraries ACT will host dress-up days, crafts and family-friendly activities throughout Children’s Book Week.
Children's Book Week celebrates Australian children's literature and the authors and illustrators who inspire young readers. Through partnerships with local musicians, choirs and community organisations, Libraries ACT continues to create engaging experiences that encourage creativity, learning and community connection.
Children's Book Week 2026 activities are free to attend. Families are encouraged to visit their local library and join the Symphony of Stories.
