The National Council of Women of ACT (Inc.) was founded in 1937. It is affiliated with the National Council of Women of Australia and the International Council of Women. The Council’s principal aim is the advancement of women and welfare of the family. National Council of Women of the Australian Capital Territory (NCWACT) is involved in running and participating in seminars, conferences, consultations and activism.
The collection contains a broad range of administration records including conference papers, seminar papers and minutes of meetings at both an executive and general level. There are also extensive collections of correspondence, both regarding general organisational matters and dialogue with politicians and activists. The collection highlights the changing social concerns and activism throughout the latter half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in the ACT, Australia and abroad. As well as highlighting the burgeoning role of women within political and social life, issues such as such as post-war peace efforts, unpaid labour, the wage gap, abortion, in-vitro fertilisation, genetically modified food, aging, and health are canvassed.
