Formation of the Welsh Society was discussed at an inaugural meeting in October 1976 and it commenced under the name, The Welsh Cambrian Society of the ACT at a General Meeting on 8 February 1977. The Society was renamed The Welsh Society of the ACT at a Special General Meeting on 22 June 1997. The name was changed to the Welsh Society of Canberra on 6 December 1998. Incorporation followed on 17 April 2000.

Apart from its social aspect, the purpose of the Society is to promote Welsh culture.

The Welsh Society of Canberra is second the Canberra Welsh group known to exist. Cymdeithas Cymry Canberra, unconnected to the present Society, existed for a short time in the late 1950s. Its first Annual General Meeting was held on 30 April 1956 with Haydn Lloyd Davies its first President.

An initial deposit of records was made in July 1996. They were subsequently removed by the Society. This deposit returns the original set of records and adds to them.
