Homework Help Hints

The six steps to developing information literacy skills:

  1. Defining the task - How to decide what you really need to find out.
  2. Locating resources - Choose from a variety of Internet and Library resources.
  3. Selecting the most useful resources - How to evaluate the information you find.
  4. Organising your information - How to write essays and bibliographies.
  5. Presenting your information effectively - Choosing the best way to present your assignment.
  6. Assessing what you have done - How to look at your work from a critical point of view. Online Librarian Ask a librarian a question by sending an email

STEP 1. DEFINING THE TASK

Ask yourself these questions before you start your assignment:

  1. What do I really want to find out?
  2. What is my purpose?
  3. Why do I need to find this out?
  4. What are the keywords of the assignment question?
  5. What do I need to do?

STEP 2. LOCATING RESOURCES

Ask yourself:

  1. Where can I find the information I need?
  2. What do I already know?
  3. What do I need to find out?
  4. What sources can I use?
  5. Where do I locate all the relevant information?

Try Internet search tools if you need to look further.

STEP 3. SELECTING THE MOST USEFUL RESOURCES

When you have gathered the information ask yourself:

  1. What information do I really need to use?
  2. What information can I leave out?
  3. How relevant is the information I have found?
  4. How credible is the information I have found?
  5. How will I record the information I have found?

STEP 4. ORGANISING YOUR INFORMATION

When you have selected your information ask yourself:

  1. How can I best use this information?
  2. Have I enough information for my purpose?
  3. Do I need to use all this information?
  4. How can I best combine information from different sources?
  • Assignment Writing Resources
  • Writing Links
  • How to Write Bibliographies

STEP 5. PRESENTING YOUR INFORMATION EFFECTIVELY

When you have decided how to organise your information ask yourself:

  1. What are the different ways the information could be presented?
  2. What would be the most effective way to present this kind of information?
  3. To whom will I be presenting this assignment?
  4. Have I done a final spelling and grammatical check of my work?

STEP 6. ASSESSING WHAT YOU HAVE DONE

When you have completed the assignment ask yourself :

  1. What did I learn from doing this?
  2. Did I achieve my purpose?
  3. How effectively did I go through each of the previous five steps of the information process?
  4. Am I happy with the result?
  5. How will this assignment help me for next time?

Each time you do an assignment follow the six step research process. It does make the task easier, and after awhile you will do it automatically.
