Wayne Berry was born in Sydney in 1942 and educated in Taree, NSW. He served in the NSW Fire Service 1963-1972 and the ACT Fire Brigade 1972-1989. He is a Graduate Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (UK) and was a member of the Federal Firefighters Union, serving as National President 1986-1989.

In the post self-government ACT Legislative Assembly he was an Australian Labor Party representative for the electorate of Canberra 1989-1995 and for Ginninderra 1995-2008. He was Deputy Chief Minister 1991-1994, Leader of the Opposition 1997-1998, Speaker of the Assembly 2001-2008, Minister for Community Services and Health 1989 and Minister for Health, Industrial Relations and Sport 1991-1994. He also chaired the Standing Committee on Health and Community Care.

Wayne Berry campaigned strongly on pro-choice and abortion decriminalisation initiatives, eventually successfully lobbying for abortion to be decriminalised in 2002. However, in 2006 he was unsuccessful in lobbying the then Governor-General not to disallow the ACT’s civil union legislation.

The collection consists mainly of reports, photocopies of correspondence, media releases and flyers, all from or relating to the office of the Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly. Some predate Wayne Berry’s period as Speaker. There are several folders of his own legislative initiatives, especially on occupational health and safety issues, and a list of his political achievements during his time in office.  Most publications have been incorporated in the ACT Heritage Library collection.
