The Belconnen Community Council was established in March 1991, with a membership representing about 40 community groups and several private citizens. It was incorporated in January 1992.
It is one of a series of such councils formed in order to represent communities based primarily on the ‘townships’ of Tuggeranong, Woden, Weston Creek, North Canberra and Gungahlin. They act in a consultative capacity to the ACT Legislative Assembly through the Community Councils Forum, whose secretariat is provided
by the Chief Minister’s Department. Most community councils developed before the establishment of LAPACs – Local Area Planning Advisory Committees – and where both operate in the same community, there is likely to be some overlap in membership.Belconnen Community Council has been primarily interested in the overall planning and development of the Belconnen area, although specific interests in health and education are also represented in this collection. While most papers refer specifically to Belconnen, some matters arising in other parts of Canberra are also included. The collection consists mainly of correspondence with government and related authorities, reports, submissions and proposals on various planning matters, minutes of meetings, background papers, political party policies and electoral platforms, brochures and publicity material.
