In about 1935 a family group from Adelaide took a motoring holiday to Canberra. The group included members of the Tucker, Clarke, Adcock and Shrubsole families, all originally from South Australia, and most belonging to the Baptist church. Arthur Adcock’s brother, Rev Alfred James Adcock, was a Baptist minister, and it was assumed by the person who wrote the notes that the then minister in Canberra, Dr A J Waldock, would have been known to the family.
The ACT Heritage Library holds the records of the Canberra Baptist Church, including the visitors books; none of the party had signed the book during the period 1930 to 1948.
The photographs of the church are undated, but assuming that they were taken on one of the anniversaries, the number of parishioners shown approximated the number on the church register only in the years 1934 to 1937. The gardens also suggest the photographs were taken at about this time.
Arthur Adcock [1885-1963] married Margary May Tucker [1890-1957] at Baptist Church, Hindmarsh, South Australia on 2 May 1912. Margary’s sister Mary Kent Tucker [1886-1954] married Edwin Redpath in 1906. There is no apparent connection with the Canberra Redpaths.
It is not known who took the photographs, or who gave them to the library.
