Lyons Community Association was formed in response to the proposed closure in 1990 of a number of schools across the ACT, particularly the Lyons Primary School which had been a centre for community activities since the suburb was established. The community picketed the school round the clock for many months, to ensure that equipment and furniture remained available should the school be reopened.
The protest was successful and the school reopened, although as a smaller institution. Following community consultation, it was also agreed that the lower third of the school grounds adjacent to the underpass would be sold by the ACT Government and developed for housing.
The collection comprises the records of the Association during the period of protest and negotiation with the ACT Government and the ACT Schools Restructuring Task Force.
