Ann Nugent was born in Winton, Queensland, in 1937. She trained as a teacher at Kelvin Grove Teachers’ College in Brisbane, later took an Arts degree at the University of New England, a Graduate Diploma in Cross Cultural Studies at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia, and finally a Master of Education at Queensland University.

In the early 1970s she set up a community-based preschool at Wreck Bay Aboriginal community, devised curriculum materials for teaching Aboriginal languages and wrote articles and a book for children The Story of Fishing at Wreck Bay, held by the ACT Heritage Library. She also wrote an account of the Wreck Bay Aboriginal community’s curriculum project and the final report of its development and implementation to the Commonwealth Schools Commission, 1980.

After moving to Canberra in 1976 Ann continued as a teacher until her retirement in 1992. During that time she also wrote for newspapers and arts magazines, had several short stories published in Hecate and wrote for Muse. In 1987 she co-founded with Bill Tully the Canberra literary magazine Blast which she co-edited with Bill until 1993. In 2005 she began the new series of Blast, re-formed as essentially a poetry magazine, which she edited and published until 2009.

Ann was a theatre critic and theatre column writer for the Canberra Times from 1986 to 1996. She also wrote essays, poetry and fiction, and edited Ordination of Catholic Women News, which promoted the ordination of women. Other published work includes collections of poetry and stories and the biography of her grandmother, Anne Hutcheson, all held by the ACT Heritage Library.

In 2008 Ann was diagnosed with Parkinsons. She joined the Canberra group Painting with Parkinsons, which she says alleviates her symptoms and encourages her to experiment with her art.

This collection mainly represents her period as theatre critic for the Canberra Times although there is some earlier material. It contains notes and reviews, correspondence and invitations, but its primary significance lies in the comprehensive collection of theatre programs and publicity material that identifies and describes the multitude of Canberra performing arts companies and their personnel over these years. As such, it supplements the extensive ACT Heritage Library collections of theatre ephemera and the archives of many of Canberra’s theatre and dance companies, particularly in its coverage of the very small, often short-lived production companies.

In using the collection it should be noted that several files may contain material that duplicates or overlaps that in other files. The most obvious overlap is between annual collections of programs and collections of a particular company or director. Similarly, collections relating to festivals may contain material duplicated in other files. Many items are not dated.

Several items refer to art galleries and musical events, while others refer to interstate or international productions.

The collection currently includes several newsletters and also reports, e.g. of drama in education conferences; these may be removed later to be incorporated in the ACT Heritage Library’s publications collection.
