Jill Waterhouse was born in Canberra, graduating in History at the Australian National University in 1966. She tutored and later lectured in British history at both ANU and Cambridge, England, and on returning to Canberra in 1990 took up the position of Community Historian at the Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG). She contributed to social history exhibitions and public events at CMAG, and to public art projects at the three house museums managed by CMAG – Lanyon, Mugga-Mugga, and her grandparents’ home Calthorpe’s House.

Jill returned to ANU in 2006 to undertake a PhD, her thesis being on early Canberra, particularly the 1920s and 1930s.

She has published A Light in the Bush: the History of the Canberra Church of England Girls’ Grammar School and the National Capital, 1926-1977 (1978), History Tours in and Around Canberra (1980), British Settlers in Australia (1987), Canberra: Early Days at the Causeway (1992), Australian National University: University House. As They Experienced It: 1954-2004 (2004), and edited Edward John Eyre, Autobiographical Narrative, 1832 to 1839 (1984).

Her other published work includes articles for the Australian Dictionary of Biography on three Canberra-based women – Maeva Cumpston, Hilda McIntosh and Beatrice Holt – and the chapters ‘History from the Hills’ in Canberra: The Guide (1997) and ‘The Spies Pub: the Hotel Kingston’ in Canberra’s Early Hotels (1999).

The material in this collection reflects 40 years of collecting and publishing local history material. It includes Jill’s research into convicts of the Canberra region as an undergraduate at ANU and the subsequent extension of this into exhibitions and talks, and publication of the journals of the explorers Edward John Eyre and Charles Sturt, both of whom had some connection with the Canberra region. The largest part of the collection relates to local history in its broadest view, which has resulted in books, articles, exhibitions and lectures. It is rich in maps, photographs and other illustrative material gathered in Australia and England.
