Robert Boden (1935-2009) qualified in 1956 with a BSc (Forestry), University of Sydney, and a Diploma of Forestry, Australian Forestry School, Canberra, and in 1972 completed his PhD at the Australian National University, Canberra, having won scholarships throughout his academic studies. From 1955 to 1968 he worked as an arboriculturist in the Department of the Interior, Canberra, engaged in research and management of parks and reserves in the ACT. During 1963 he was seconded to the Department of Foreign Affairs as Colombo Plan Adviser on afforestation to the Governments of India and Pakistan.

Robert was granted leave in 1968-1971 to investigate the ecological aspects of land use planning in the Canberra Region with particular reference to conservation and recreation, leading to his PhD. From 1971 to 1973 he was Executive Officer responsible for National Parks and Tourism policy aspects in the Northern Territory, then until 1976 was Assistant Secretary, Department of the Environment and Conservation. In 1976 he was appointed Assistant Director, Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service until becoming the first Director of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra in 1979.

In 1989 Robert established a successful consultancy practice in conservation and natural resource management with emphasis on tree evaluation and assessment and heritage tree management. He conducted many tree health assessments for ACT schools and colleges and for development projects, as well as for CSIRO, Government House, and Royal Canberra Golf Club in relation to management of the trees in Westbourne Woods.

In 2001 he was appointed Adviser to the Conservator of Flora and Fauna who, under the ACT Tree Protection (Interim Scheme) Act 2001, was required to seek advice on each application to undertake a tree-damaging activity to a significant tree. He was also tree adviser to the jury for the Canberra International Arboretum and Gardens design competition and was a member of the Tree Advisory group for the Arboretum.

Robert completed a conservation management plan for the heritage listed Bass Gardens in Griffith, and worked with Peter Freeman on similar plans for Civic Square and Kings Park in Canberra and the former Artillery School at North Head, Manly. He has completed heritage citations for Westbourne Woods Arboretum, Yarralumla Nursery, Glenloch Cork Oak Plantation and Weston Park.

Robert received several awards for his work. In 2005 the Director of the Australian National Botanic Gardens presented him with a bronze plaque, now on the Eucalypt Lawn at the Gardens, celebrating “a life dedicated to trees and amenity horticulture with a special interest in the Eucalypts”. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2007 for service to horticulture, particularly through contributions to the development of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, and to the preservation of the natural environment. In 2009 Engineers Australia celebrated their 90th anniversary by planting a grove of pin oaks, a cultivar called ‘Freefall’, developed by Robert in 1965, at the Canberra International Arboretum and Gardens.

The material in this collection was selected, and largely described, by Robert's wife, Susan Parsons Boden.
