Canberra Dance Theatre is the ACT’S longest operational dance company. It began as the Canberra Dance Ensemble (1978-1983) and performs locally, nationally and internationally. It is a non-profit community dance company which also provides dance classes for professionals.
The Ensemble began a schools programme in mid-1979.
The Canberra Dance Theatre was for many years located in the old Turner men’s quarters in Childers Street. In 2007 it moved to a purpose-built dance studio on the corner of Childers Street and Barry Drive, in the same arts precinct, pending redevelopment of the area. It expects to move into permanent premises when development is complete.
