Papers retained in 1997 with permission 2CA management by long serving staff member Cheryl Mackay, who donated the collection in 2013.

The papers relate largely, but not solely, to the promotional aspects of the radio station; both sale of advertising and promotion of the station.

Cheryl commenced at Radio Station 2CA on 22nd November 1967 collating each day's advertising schedules and putting the commercial times onto an invoice.  She held this position for two years and then spent two years in England after winning a trip in a 2CA raffle.

Cheryl returned to 2CA in December 1971 and was the Advertising Schedules Clerk for 13 years, Sales Secretary for 3 years and General Manager's Assistant for 10 years.

In 1997 radio stations 2CA and FM104.7 were sold and Cheryl left in June of that year. When the stations were sold, Steve Mummery the Program Director advised her to take the 2CA memorabilia as it was being thrown out.

Other 2CA material preserved by Cheryl Mackay was also donated to Canberra Museum and Gallery in 2013. A list of the material accepted by Canberra Museum and Gallery appears at the end of this box list.

Albert John ‘Jack’ Ryan (1897-1984) was an electrical fitter with the Postmaster General’s Department (PMG) before enlisting in the AIF early in 1918 and receiving training at the Wireless Training School.

By March 1928 Jack was managing the Australian General Electric radio and electrical shop in the Sydney Building, Civic Centre (http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-vn3104836 ), before moving to Giles Street, Kingston in December of that year. Jack was becoming well known throughout Australia as an experimenter and practical demonstrator in radio, and became one of the pioneers in commercial broadcasting. He began with a 5 watt experimental station, and in February 1930 advertised that Radio Coy, Kingston, would broadcast not only the races from the Canberra Turf Club’s next meeting but all metropolitan events as well.

In 1931 Jack was awarded a broadcast licence to operate Canberra’s first radio station, 2CA. It was one of the first licences issued to country radio stations. The station operated from his shop, AJ Ryan’s Radio-Electrical and Musical Service, with two transmitter masts mounted on the roof. In May, with a more powerful transmitter, he broadcast election speeches of candidates for the Advisory Council, and received several letters confirming that New Zealand listeners had heard the broadcast. The first official transmission was on 14 November 1931.

Until 1938 the broadcast hours were limited and mainly out of shop hours so that first Jack and later his assistant George Barlin could manage both shop and radio station. The station, only the second in Australia to do so, broadcast 24 hours a day from October 1938 until the outbreak of World War 2, then continued on reduced hours until the resumption of 24-hour broadcasts on 1 December 1967.

In 1935 Jack was allowed to increase the power from the original 50 watts to 500 watts, making 2CA the highest powered country station in Australia. However, he was required to move the transmitter out of town, to a site then known as Radio Hill but now the pine plantation on the corner of Newcastle Street and Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick and a heritage listed site. Jack bought two wooden lattice masts from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, which had moved to Sydney during the Depression, and combined them with his own masts to achieve the required height. A small hut was built on the site and George Barlin became the station operator.

The site overlooked the airport which at that time had no navigational aids. Jack, who had been a signaller in World War 1, entered into a contract with the Department of Civil Aviation to provide air traffic control services – in Morse code – to commercial aircraft until the government established its own navigational aids at the airport in 1936. In April 1935 the Kingston shop moved to new premises in Giles Street, next to Reg Maloney’s (previously Snow’s menswear).

In 1937 Jack sold AJ Ryan Broadcasters Ltd to Denison Estates, and 2CA operated under the name of Canberra Broadcasters Ltd. A connection with 2GB in Sydney in 1936 led to 2CA becoming part of the Macquarie Network, which was bought by Fairfax in 1978. 2CA was acquired by Sonance Pty Ltd in 1988 but was sold immediately to Austereo Pty Ltd. Village Roadshow acquired a controlling interest in Austereo in 1988.

When Jack sold to Denison Estates the station had outgrown both its makeshift premises and its technology. The station leased a new building at 4 Mort Street, Civic, next to Civic Theatre, which included a theatrette that hosted plays, concerts and art shows throughout the 1940s. An increase in power to 2000 watts was approved, and a Blaw Knox self-supporting mast was erected at Gungahlin. This was the first such mast in Australia. Prime Minister Joseph Lyons opened the new studios on 3 June 1938.

By 1954 another move was necessary – to the station’s own building at 64 Northbourne Avenue – and another transmitter mast was added at Gungahlin. Ten years later a third mast was required, and ten years after that 2CA and the newly formed 2CC agreed to share a mast next to the existing ABC masts on Black Mountain. The masts at Gungahlin were leased by the ANU’s 2XX.

Meanwhile, the Canberra Times and 2CA joined forces to form Canberra Television Limited in 1959; CTC-7 began telecasts on 3 June 1962.

By 1967 the station had a mobile studio in a caravan, and a portable studio (built by station technicians) that was used mainly for in-store broadcasts. At the main studios was the Muzak base station, which piped music via the PMG [Telecom] landlines to hotels, shops etc. In 1976 the caravan was replaced by a double decker bus, with studio facilities below and an open upper deck from which broadcasts were made. Several station cars were also equipped for outside news gathering to be relayed through the main station.

The station’s broadcast frequency changed from 1050 to 1053 MHz in 1978. FM broadcasts began in 1981, AM stereo in 1986. In 1995 2CA was the first Canberra radio station to have a website.

The station moved again in 1983, to the first floor of the Jolimont Centre, directly across Northbourne Avenue. The premises were shared with FM104.7, and the station operated under the business name Radio Canberra. In November 1993 the Jolimont Centre came under siege and the station premises were badly damaged in the ensuing fire. Operations continued from the borrowed 2CN 666 outside broadcast van until the building was repaired.

From its inception, 2CA has been deeply involved with the local community, reporting local and national events, supporting local organisations, promoting local businesses and sponsoring sporting and entertainment events either alone or with others. In the early days 2CA equipment and relay services frequently supported the broadcasts by both the ABC and commercial stations based in Sydney; 2CA has the distinction of providing the microphone used in the first broadcast from Parliament House – by the ABC, of a Premiers’ Conference in the early 1930s – which was relayed to the entire east coast and reportedly heard in Perth.

Innovative programming was a feature, and news and events were relayed from and to other radio stations. The opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932 was relayed from Sydney, and Charles Kingsford Smith’s Morse code messages as he crossed the Pacific Ocean from west to east in 1934 were broadcast from the Kingston shop.

2CA pioneered several styles of music programming that became standard features of commercial broadcasting. Jack’s original licence application included letters of support from Canberra’s musical organisations. Local orchestras and dance bands like Les Pogson, and later Bruce Lansley whose main job was as a 2CA announcer, were broadcast live, supplemented by classical music from the shop’s stock. Later still, major concerts by significant people such as Split Enz, Little River Band, Jon English and others were presented to audiences of 10,000 or more.

Children’s programmes were included almost from the beginning, and in later years developed into huge public events featuring Humphrey B Bear and the inaugural Teddy Bears’ Picnic to raise funds for charity. The 2CA Women’s Radio Club began in February 1938 with a Queanbeyan branch opening in March. The following year saw the 2CA Younger Set meeting at Radio House in Mort Street.

Almost every celebrity who came to Canberra was interviewed, no matter what creed or colour. One of these was Lance Sharkey, of the Australian Communist Party, thus resulting in the first Communist broadcast in Australia and a deluge of what would later be called ‘talkback radio’.

Promotions were of all sorts and from all kinds of locations. Beazley and Bruce, the original supporters of Jack Ryan, and other commercial organisations co-sponsored events ranging from in-store promotions to motor rallies, cycling and walking races, beauty pageants and talent quests.

The collection consists mainly of such promotional material and the photographic record of events, personalities and celebrity guests. Other material includes staff lists, some administrative documents and advertising rate cards, survey reports, various station histories, some recorded media including a videotape of the Jolimont Centre siege, and a comprehensive collection of newscuttings 1938-1996.
