Old Canberrans Book Club |
On the shelves of the ACT Heritage Library is an anomalous title. Kylie Tennant’s Ride on Stranger, a novel published in 1943, is the story about a young woman growing to maturity in Sydney between the two World Wars.
The ACT Heritage Library collects books, journals, photographs, maps and manuscripts relating to the history and development of Canberra and the ACT and this book is neither about Canberra, written by a local author, nor published in the ACT,
Pasted on the inside, however, was a list of names and address for the foundation members of the “Old Canberran’s Book Club”.
Former students of the Australian Forestry School (AFS) formed a club to share books. This is the distribution list for 1944/45 and includes not only their current address but the years they attended the AFS.
Most of the men on this list, many of them very prominent in their profession, did not remain in Canberra, but they maintained a relationship with the place and their professional community through membership of a book sharing club known as the Old Canberrans Book Club. By cross-checking this list against a list of students of the AFS published in LT Carron’s A Brief History of the Australian Foresty School, 2000 we find that 37% of all students maintained membership of the Old Canberrans Book Club.
The item is now in the manuscripts collection of the ACT Heritage Library - HMSS 0261.
