National Trust Of Australia (ACT)
Living Treasures Heritage Competition

November-December 2006, ACT Heritage Library

Prize winning and selected entries in the National Trust’s annual heritage competition are on display in the ACT Heritage Library.

The competition’s theme for 2006 is “Living Treasures”.

Children and teenagers were encouraged to become involved in the community by interviewing someone older and from a different background to themselves and presenting their findings in a format of their choice.  On display are posters, artworks, essays and multi-media presentations of the stories of Canberra residents and places treasured by the children.

Territory Treasures

December 2005-December 2006, ACT Heritage Library

If you are interested in exploring Canberra’s past you won’t want to miss an exhibition currently being held at the ACT Heritage Library.

“The items on display give a valuable insight into the development of the region and showcase some of our colourful history. The display is modelled on the National Library’s “Treasures from Australia’s Great Libraries exhibition, which we also contributed items to,” said Manager, ACT Heritage Library, Antoinette Buchanan.

“Our display explores the history of the ACT through significant items of ephemera, manuscripts, photographs, plans and printed material.

“Shackles and military items from the convict settlement in the present-day at “Charnwood” in the Belconnen area and original letters and photos sent home during WWII from the three tragically doomed sons of the Eddison family of Woden Valley are poignant, visual mementos of Canberra’s past.

Territory Treasures

 “Other items on display include:

  • the 1908 report on Canberra’s selection as site of the federal capital;
  • Walter Burley Griffin’s personal copy of a book on local flora;
  • programs for the 1913 naming ceremony for Canberra;
  • a program for the opening of Parliament House in 1927, including the menu and seating plan for the gala dinner which included a who’s who of political and social life of the time;
  • a Hotel Kurrajong menu from 1927;
  • a 1926 ticket from the first day of Canberra’s bus service; and
  • items relating to the establishment of the Mount Stromlo Observatory and Honeysuckle Creek Tracking station.

“So don’t miss this chance to see Canberra’s birth certificate and coming of age ceremonies in this eclectic display of rare Territory treasures!”

The Heritage Library is located on the first level of the Woden Library Building in Corinna Street, Phillip.
